"People were already interacted with Madden 22 coins one another online, electronically, so it was an incredibly natural extension," claimed Trevor Wood, an 11th-grade English teacher and advisor to the school's video game club. "The district and the school was very interested in seeing the development of the video game group, because it was one of the few ways that kids could communicate with one another socially."

The recent popularity of the game "Among Us," an online multiplayer contest was a huge draw for Velazquez as well as many others to join the club. Before COVID-19, Wood told me that the club for video games had less than 10 members. Now about 60 students have joined the discussion channel of the group.

This year, the club also delved into the competitive side of gaming and challenged high school students from Washington as well as across the nation to compete in various games. The group has attempted to compete like "Mario Kart" and "League of Legends" with limited successes, but Velazquez's win could be a boost for the club. Wood explained that the team's "Super Smash Bros." team is nearing the state finals competition and is undefeated.

"I think there are more students like Jair in your average school than you think," Wood said. "People who are crazy good at a video game are just not given an outlet to have it be anything more than just random matchmaking on the internet."

After the move to Lake Stevens in the fall of 2019, Velazquez was not able to spend much time to attend school until the doors were closed in the spring. Velazquez claimed he met people with cheap mut coins the video game club which he's not yet met in person. Still, the students hype each other in every game.
